Two New Laser Measuring Tools by Johnson Level

Being first with a winners attitude

I realize it seems almost everyone has an opinion these days. I'd like to mention something less of an opinion but more of what our Country needs right now. We need more people willing to accept responsibility for their own actions within the work place and within our governing bodies. A guy I used to play ball with in High School had the attitude we as Americans now need to exhibit. During an inning change he would run out onto the field and run right in front of the other teams pitcher that was coming off the field. He would be out onto the field crossing paths with the pitcher before the other team had even gotten off the field. He wanted to show that he and his team was first, and willing to give the effort to get out there first and win. This attitude of being first carried my friend all the way to the minor leagues which is quite an accomplishment. As American workers in the workplace I feel we can do the same thing. We can jump out there and admit to our employers and co-workers when we've made a mistake and do it before they can point it out and promote the idea that we're responsible and giving a little more effort than what most think is the requirement.

Surveying Tripod Education

The model shown is a DUAL clamp tripod……that happens to have 1 quick clamp at the top, and a screw clamp (wing nut) at the bottom. Very secure tripod since the user clamps BOTH top clamps and bottom clamps……legs wont loosen and drop your expensive instrument. I recommend a Dual-Clamp tripod for Total Stations, GPS Instruments, and Robotics Instruments since they all have some weight to them. Auto Levels and Transits and Lasers you'd be okay with a Single Clamp tripod. Some Dual Clamp tripods use screw clamps at top AND bottom. Some use Quick Clamps at top AND bottom. Some have a quick clamp AND screw clamp. This is pretty much the combinations I have seen. The screw clamp is most tight and secure. The quick clamp is a lever with a cam type of clamp that gets tight when you flip the lever.

Single Clamp tripods have clamps only at top , or only at bottom. Some have only screw clamp, some only have quick clamp.

Presco Roll Flagging Best Flagging Available

Presco Roll Flagging is the best rolling flagging available due to how long it lasts. It outlasts other brands with how long the color holds before fading, it stretches well and ties well. You won't go wrong with Presco "Texas Roll Flagging". When I was an Instrument Man on a Surveying Crew I was taught to wrap wood stakes by using both hands wrapping in opposite directions, while stretching and over-lapping the flagging all at the same time. After tying a secure knot, some length is left over on the ends to make the flagged stake visible. The method makes for a very tight and durable flagged stake. The over-lapping and stretching avoids the flagging from loosening later and sliding down the stake. If done properly the flagging will be so tight it would need to be cut off of the stake using a knife or cutter of some type.

We added the Apache Machine Control Product Line to our selection of machine control products. If you dont know anything about machine control, in a nutshell it's controlling a machine! Funny right? It's used by heavy construction firms that operate heavy equipment such as bull dozers and trackhoes for site prep. Site preparation professionals use our machine control laser detectors to grade construction sites prior to construction. Rotary Laser levels are set up to beam across a construction site, while machine control detectors are mounted to the blades of dozers, and arms of trackhoes. The grading contractor can read the blueprints (aka construction documents) to see if there is cut or fill needed at any location of the construction site. With machine control detectors the dozer operator will know if s/he is above or below grade. Hence the term "Machine Control". While we only sell the 2D machine control products, there is a more advanced subject and system and that is of 3D where the sensors detect X Y , and Z coordinates for elevation. 3D systems are expensive and not normally needed except for specialized applications. 2D systems that we represent are commonly used on many construction sites all over the world.

What is a Sirvayur?

A Sirvayur is something that grubs around in the woods looking for little sticks and stones. When he finds them he does some kind of weerd dance around thern with a funny-looking 3-leg crutch wich he leans on and looks at. When he don't find them he walks around all day like he's lost. Sometimes you see them squashed by cars along rodes, espeshelly in the sumer when all th other bugs are out. A Sirvayur has one big eye and one littel eye like popeye. He is stooped over from being bent all the time. His face looks like old lether. He cusses terribul. He cant' reed because he mesures between things and then puts down a number in a littel book wich is difrint than wat his littel map says. He always mesures to a stick or stone, stops neer it, and puts in another stick or stone. He is not too brite because he is always markeing marks on side-walks and rodes to find his way home. His pants are allways tore from rock salt and his shoes look like they was made of mud. People stare at him, dogs chase him and he always looks wore out. I don't know why anyone wants to be a Sirvayur.

We're Shooting Grades and Taking Elevation

There are various types of rods used in the land surveying, construction stake-out, and site prep industry available. There are various types of rods are Grade Rods, Survey Elevation Rods, Lenker Rods, Level Rods, Cut/Fill Rods, but they all boil down to being used to figure elevation for various reasons. These reasons could be shooting grades for highway work such as grading a road bed and ditches, or installing storm sewers and drop inlets, or installing sanitary sewer lines and manholes. Other reasons could be setting a septic tank underground at the right elevation so there's enough fall from the sewer that exits a building over to the tank. Any time you need to measure from a known level reference, as when using a transit level, auto level, or laser level, a grade rod can be invaluable. A "Smart Rod" that Agatec makes is one worth looking at as well.

Cut-and-Fill Rods are used to quickly figure out if a dozer needs to cut or fill in a particular area. These are great tools for construction stake-out and grading contractors. One cut-and-fill rod we carry is the Crain One-Shot Grade Rod.

Measuring Rods also double as a grade rod. Measuring Rods are rods you can use in a vertical or horizontal fashion to measure distance. Great examples of uses are a land surveyor that shoots grades and then quickly needing a measurement of a sidewalk width, or the height of a building. Another example would be

Pocket Rods can be handy on any construction site when you're wanting to take a quick measurement for elevation from level.

So there you have it, a quick run-down of the various types of rods used by land surveyors, grading contractors, construction stake-out folks, building contractors, and anyone wanting to find work from elevation.

Measuring Tools

There are so many different types of measuring tools currently out on the market, it’s hard to know which one to choose. If you need help knowing how to measure something and which tool is most suited for the job read below to see a summary of the different types of measuring equipment that we carry,

Distance Measuring Wheels are excellent tools for measuring long distances in a hurry. To use, simply reset the counter, place the wheel at the point you want to start measuring, and roll in a straight direction to the stopping point, then read the counter. Small Wheels are ideal for indoor measuring, Medium Wheels for both indoor and outdoor, and Large Wheels are ideal for outdoor measurements only.

Laser Distance Measuring Tools, AKA "Electronic Tape Measures", "Laser Distance Finders" or "Digital Measuring Devices", offer the most accurate measuring. You simply point the laser distance measuring devices dot at a target like a wall, a house, a utility pole, nearly any object, and the device will show the distance on its LCD screen. These measuring devices are true time savers and are very accurate.

We offer a variety of Measuring Tapes, including pocket tapes, long tapes and specialty tapes. Our long tapes are available in steel or fiberglass. Pocket Measuring Tapes are handy to have around. With an enclosed case and belt clip, they are easy to carry and easy to use. We offer many different units of measure like metric, feet and inches, and feet and tenths.

Measuring Rod Rulers are very handy tools. Not only can they be used in a vertical fashion, but can be used horizontally as well when, for example, measuring the distance from the center of a manhole to back of curb. Some rods also have Surveying Grade Rods marking as well as the Measuring Ruler Scale.
